LGBTQ+ Equality

Mike has always been a strong ally for the LGBTQ+ community. He believes that no one should face discrimination or harassment based on their gender identity or sexual orientation, and that no one should face hostility because of their sexuality.

Mike cosponsored and voted for the Equality Act, which provides anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people throughout society, including in employment, housing, credit, education, public services, and more.

Mike supported and cosponsored a House resolution to oppose former President Trump’s ban on transgender individuals serving in the Armed Forces, and he was glad to see the Biden Administration reverse that decision. He knows that any qualified person with the courage and dedication to serve our country should not be discriminated against due to their gender or gender identity.

Mike is also an advocate for the equal treatment of LGBTQ+ couples who hope to adopt a foster child. He cosponsored the Every Child Deserves a Family Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), and marital status in the administration and provision of child welfare services, and to improve the safety, well-being, and permanency for LGBTQ+ foster youth.

Finally, he believes that our country has a role to play in helping protect the rights of LGBTQ+ people around the world, and he will work with the Biden Administration to advocate for them.
